OCTOBER 14 MEETING

HELLO.

We had another meeting today. The recycling initiative is continuing: all the IS teachers have been notified of our plans, and Mr. Ankeney has suggested somehow expanding the recycling effort to Arts. I am not certain if that would involve current members taking out recycling from Arts classes or if it would involve getting Arts students involved in the effort and in our club. Either way, kudos to the members currently involved in making sure recyclables get recycled.

We have also begun an initiative for getting a bicycle rack in the 1100 building. So far we have simply contacted the school—this initiative is still in its early stages.

Also, T-Shirts! We planned to order some new T-Shirts for the club and to sell on Earth Day. They are all organic, I believe, and they have a great design, created by Benjamin Rehm from last year. I'd post the design but I do not have it on my computer, so here is a picture of a tree:

The actual design is of a tree and some roots that look like a bunch of bikes, so like, it's not that different from the picture. Ben's design is much cooler, though.

Those are the main points from the meeting today! If you have any questions, ideas, or if you just want to say hello, feel free to post a comment underneath this post.

On a completely different note, I'm currently idly listening to Björk's new album/expansive multimedia project, Biophilia. Seems appropriate, considering that the "biophilia hypothesis", as defined by Wikipedia, "suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems...In other words, our natural love for life helps sustain life". I suppose most of us here are biophiliacs in some way. Be kind to nature and have a great weekend!

  1. Hi all,
Just thought I'd mention that I noticed one of the big recycling bins outside was full of styrofoam on Friday. The construction guys are gone so not sure where this came from. We'll get new shirts ordered soon. Are we on for a new design contest?

  2. That's strange. It wasn't the dumpster, right? Unfortunately, a lot of non-recyclables get put in bins. Part of our initiative includes placing prominent signs on the bins that include information on what is and what isn't recyclable.

As for the design contest, I don't know if a design contest is happening. I personally like the idea of keeping our current logo, simply for questions of "brand identity". However, I think it's still up in the air and another officer may be better suited for answering that question.

  3. hey i did notice all the styrofoam that was in the dumpster, i asked a lot of the teachers, its from the installation of Mrs. Krueger's promeathean board. Alot of it ended up in the dumpster right behind the sci-tech building where the construction guys were.

  4. When I was walking around school at some point, I saw a few students taking a massive amount of trash and recyclables to the dumpster. I didn't stick around to see where they were putting it all, but it just might have been an instance of the kids not paying attention to the labels on the dumpsters.

  5. I know sometimes it takes me a second to process the fact that the recycling is the recycling bin just because it's super dirty. I don't know if anyone else would be up for cleaning it, but we should do that sometime soon.

Re: the design contest, I know Bryce proposed it because she thought we wouldn't have a large enough audience for Ben's design, but given that we're placing an order for 40 t-shirts (most of which will probably be bought by the club) soon, I think we might want to focus on selling that design before we branch (pun unintentional) out.
